Tickford Racing’s Declan Fraser, 22, managed no further than 50 yards before being spun into the pit wall by Brad Jones Racing’s Macauley Jones, who shared the 12th row of the grid with Fraser.
The Safety Car was immediately called into the crash barrier with Fraster’s Mustang on the left side.
The barrier had been moved so far that a crane had to be used to put it back in place.
The race was suspended for approximately 20 minutes for repairs before resuming at 3:30 p.m. local time.
It was the second Tickford Racing car to run into trouble in the top 10 on Sunday after James Courtney’s disastrous shootout.
Courtney missed the start line for Sunday’s 95-lap finale after his turn seven crash in the shootout – his first DNS in six years.
When the safety car came out, Chaz Mostert was leading ahead of pole-starter David Reynolds.
Mostert stole the lead from Reynolds in a clever move on the run to turn one.
