Matt Carpenter returned to St. Louis as a member of the New York Yankees and received a standing ovation from Cardinals fans.
One of the league’s better stories is the resurgence of Matt Carpenter. After spending most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, he signed with the New York Yankees and quickly blossomed. But this weekend he returned to St. Louis.
Before Friday’s game Carpenter was overcome with emotion when he was talking about telling his family they were going back to St. Louis. Carpenter batted third in the Yankees’ lineup and as he entered the batter’s box, Cardinals fans gave him a standing ovation.

Carpenter tossed his helmet to the fans before returning to home plate. On his first hit as a guest member at Busch Stadium, Carpenter drilled a single to right field to defeat D..J. Lemahieu, who was on first base, to third.
In his 11 seasons with the Cardinals, Carpenter won a World Series title, received the 2013 Silver Slugger Award, and was selected to the All-Star Game three times (2013-14, 2016).
Overall, Carpenter recorded a .262 batting average, .368 base percentage, .449 batting percentage, 155 home runs, 576 RBI, 752 runs made and 1,153 hits.
With the Yankees this season, Carpenter has a .322 batting average, a 1.226 OPS, 15 home runs, 36 RBI and 37 hits in 43 games (before Friday’s game).
Carpenter returned to St. Louis and the team that cheered him on for 11 seasons welcomed him with open arms while wearing a Yankee uniform.
