Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom is back from a left hip injury

CHICAGO – Washington Capitals front Nicklas Backstrom coming out of the season after being sidelined with a left hip injury.

Backstrom skated again Wednesday morning before Washington’s game in Chicago. Coach Peter Laviolette said the veteran center will meet with a coach after practice, but everything seems fine.

Backstrom, who turned 34 last month, had 38 assists and 53 points in 55 games last season.

“You’re talking about our top scorer last year, someone who has been a mainstay of this organization for a long time,” Laviolette said. “So when you add a player back into the squad that’s as skilled as he is and who can make plays like him (maybe), that’s a boon.”

Defender player Trevor van Riemsdyk and center Nic Dowd is also expected to take on the Blackhawks. Dowd and van Riemsdyk will come out of the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol.

“Those two, you know, we’re hoping,” Laviolette said.

Laviolette talks forward Garnet Hathaway still in protocol.
