to see the opportunities Wanda Syke The return to hosting duties for the annual Academy Awards is little to nonexistent following the events that transpired after the 2022 awards show.
Wanda, who co-hosted Hollywood’s Biggest, Most Shocking Night of Entertainment alongside Regina Hall and Amy Schumer, said: “Oh fuck no,” when asked if she could during her performance on Tuesday, July 12 at ” Live with Kelly and Ryan.”
“I mean, I shouldn’t say it like that,” the veteran comedienne added to her response. “It was an incredible honor and I think it’s something you want to do, you do it once, and I don’t know if I want to do it again.”
Although the 58-year-old star noted that the celebration was an “amazing night” filled with “good vibes” throughout the Dolby Theatre, like many others she felt that the aftermath of the evening’s Best Male Actor-winning Will Smith , Chris Rock’s slapping overshadows many of the evening’s fantastic moments.
“It was just, what happened? Couldn’t believe it. Shock,” Sykes said, recalling the moment the “King Richard” star took the stage and slapped Rock — as he was presenting the Best Documentary category — for making a joke about the shaved head of the king’s wife actor, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Sykes continued: “So everybody just sit here? It was like the show just went on and I was looking behind the curtain like he’s still sitting here? What’s happening? What’s happening? It was crazy, it was just bizarre.”
While fans may not see Sykes host again on the Oscars stage, ABC’s entertainment president said that despite the incident, it’s been a “really successful year for the show,” and the network is even open to the idea of rocking it to have the show hosted next year. The “Spiral” star hosted the ceremony back in 2005.
“My assessment of the Oscars was that it really was a successful year for the show. Of course, there was a lot of controversy that overshadowed a lot of the positive things about the show, but I was really happy with the program,” he said. “Even before that very unfortunate moment, the show started year after year and we came back with great success.”
After the slap, which was heard worldwide, Smith issued multiple apologies and resigned from the academy before accepting, in person or virtually, a 10-year ban from all Oscars-related events.
