Voice judge Jess Mauboy breaks down in tears over body image pain
The Voice star Jess Mauboy broke down in tears after sharing an emotional message about body image.
The judge reacted to David Aumua’s blind audition when she spoke about the “tricks” our minds can play on our looks.

David, 24, had told judges Jess, Guy Sebastian, Jason Derulo and Rita Ora that low self-esteem had kept him from auditioning on previous seasons of The Voice.
“I watch The Voice every year and just felt like I wasn’t ready,” he said. “I felt there was a lot more to learn.
“And besides, I was more embarrassed to show myself.”
As David got emotional and paused to collect himself, Jess encouraged David, “Take your time bro.”
He continued, “I guess growing up a big guy and choosing music was a tough decision for me because I felt like the songs I like didn’t fit my body to that type of genre .”
“I knew I had the voice, but my body was kind of holding me back. And then I thought, ‘You know what? Unwrap it.’”
His words prompted a loud response from the Voice audience and an inspirational message from Jess.
“I think that’s the crazy thing we do in our heads — and it’s understandable because we see it everywhere,” she said.
“You know, society is making us what we should be, how we should look and how we should behave.
“It hurts me to hear you say that you didn’t feel worthy enough, that you didn’t feel good enough.
“Our minds definitely play tricks on us when we have all that noise outside.
“But if you can look in the mirror and acknowledge and respect yourself and say to yourself, ‘I get that.’ i have the ability I have the power. I have the Power. I am me. I am unique. There’s nobody in this world like me.’”
Then Jess burst into tears, obviously emotional at the words she said to David.
“And I just love that you got to a point in your life where you realized how awesome you are,” she said. “How great, you really are.
“Just standing up there shows that you showed up, that you’re here today, doing exactly what you’re supposed to do.
“And I want to work with you. I want to see you grow and come out of his shell a lot more. I want to see you become yourself and show the world who you are and what you stand for. Let’s go.”
After a tense deliberation, with Jess Guy sensationally blocking and begging on his knees, David finally made his decision.
“I love each and every one of you, but I have to join Team Jess,” he said.
