Vergil Ortiz Jr. relieves Michael McKinson with TKO (video)

Vergil Ortiz Jr. went undefeated after twice dropping Michael McKinson en route to a TKO win in Round 9 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, TX.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Michael McKinson continued after an unfortunate delay, but Ortiz, as expected, won impressively.

Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) went undefeated and maintained his 100 percent KO rating after stopping McKinson via TKO in round 9 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, TX. Ortiz lives in nearby Grand Prairie, TX and had the crowd on his side against England’s McKinson.

Ortiz and McKinson were scheduled to fight in March, but the fight was postponed after Ortiz was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis due to overtraining.

McKinson didn’t stand much of a chance against Ortiz, who moved forward and delivered power punches for most of the fight.

Ortiz was in control of the entire fight but had a cut in round 2 after a headbutt with McKinson. Ortiz’s orthodox stance contradicted McKinson’s southpaw positioning, with several clashes throughout the night.

Undeterred by the cut, Ortiz knocked out McKinson’s mouthpiece with a left hook in round 3. Ortiz’s left hook burned and damaged McKinson later in the fight.

McKinson couldn’t get anything going and was on the backfoot the entire fight. Near the end of the eighth round, Ortiz caught McKinson with a left hook to the liver that dropped McKinson. McKinson got up and finished the round, but the end was near.

Early in the ninth round, Ortiz dropped McKinson again with another left hook. McKinson got up, but his corner ended the fight.

Ortiz looked fantastic and continued his upward trajectory boxes welterweight Division. He said FanSided before the fight that he would be willing to fight the winner of a hypothetical matchup between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr.
