Mathieu van der Poel kept his nerve in the intense final Tour of Flanderswho claimed a second victory in the event after an exciting sprint finish. Tadej Pogacarwho dominated most of the race was frustrated when Van der Poel took a win in the end.

The Dutch rider followed Pogacar for most of the race but made a perfectly timed final effort with just 250m to go. The Tour de France champion was left in tatters as he was only able to finish fourth at the event and was also passed by two other athletes. Pagacar was aiming for his third Monument title but was competing in Flanders for the first time. Pogacar was visibly frustrated after crossing the finish line but had only himself to blame for his missteps on the day.

“At first I was very disappointed because I didn’t make my sprint. I got locked up, but that’s cycling. I wasn’t even mad [with] everyone. It may have seemed like it, but I was frustrated with myself.”

Pogacar took the lead for a roughly 272.5km race. A brutal mid-race climb meant only Van der Poel could actually keep up with Pogacar. On the next hill he attacked again, this time Van der Poel and Madouas were able to keep up with him. This trio was caught by Van Baarle with 38km to go.

On the third and final climb, Van der Poel was able to keep up with Pogacar. As they began to swap and battle for the lead, the other two athletes caught up to them. Van der Poel waited until that moment to start his sprint and Pogacar was boxed in and missing out on a well-deserved podium.

“In the beginning I wasn’t even sure if I would come to the Classics, [so] winning is incredible. I was just trying to hold Tadej’s wheel [on the climbs] …then I had a couple of kilometers to get my legs spinning and focus on the sprint,” Van der Poel told
