Soul and hip-hop royalty descended on Rockefeller Center Thursday night for the grand opening of Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace.
R&B singer Usher hosted the opening — and while he was supposed to take the stage at 7:30 p.m., “Usher didn’t play until after 9:30 p.m. and he only went for maybe one song.” A source told Page Six.
Still, it was a roller skating party for the ages. The massive bash brought in Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Jermaine Dupri, Michael Strahan, Floyd Mayweather, and Meek Mill, who “skated all night… [it] definitely had fun,” another source told us at the party.
At one point, Mill landed on the ground while skating backwards. Meanwhile, Usher led several dance moments at the rink — including performing his “1, 2 Step” to Ciara’s hit song.
Downtown icons Patti Smith, Gayle King, Richie Akiva, Joey Badass, John McEnroe and his wife Patty Smyth were also in attendance.
Later, guests headed to the swanky Le Chalet on L’Avenue, where a spy told us that Blige left for her own jam on the dance floor. “Mary J. Blige danced with will.i.am, Dr. Dre, D-Nice and Q Tip to their own song,” says the spy. “DJ Nikki Kynard played ‘Just Fine’.”
The rink is now open until October and will host more musical performances.
Liberty Ross is behind the project, recreating her father Ian “Flipper” Ross’ original “Boogie” rink, which opened in LA in 1979. It was nicknamed “Studio 54 on Wheels” according to Charlie’s Angels actress Jaclyn Smith.
