USC and UCLA are reportedly trying to leave Pac-12 for another conference

USC and UCLA are two dominant brands in the Pac-12, but that relationship with the conference reportedly may not last long.

The USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins are two of the most recognized brands in numerous sports for the Pac-12. The loss of either or both programs would be devastating to the conference and its future, especially with other leagues gaining strength at the time.

Now it looks like we’re headed for a future where both programs join another conference and leave the Pac-12 in the dust.

According to Pac-12 insider Jon Wilner, USC and UCLA plan to exit the Pac-12 and join the Big Ten, hopefully by 2024.

As Wilner notes, this step is far from complete and there is certainly further negotiation between the schools and the conferences involved, but the report shows that this is what the Trojans and Bruins want.

Report: USC, UCLA Eye Big Ten Move, Exit Pac-12

Just to address the elephant in the room, yes, it’s extremely odd to think of two Californian schools playing in a conference where the identity is heavily rooted in the Midwest. But unfortunately, that’s how modern conferences move.

That being said, though, this really is a wild bombshell to be dropped at the end of June. In the same year that we saw Texas and Oklahoma make plans to go to the SEC and shake up the Big 12, we now seem on the verge of seeing two more Power 5 leagues shaken up.

In addition, this raises concerns about the future of the Pac-12. Yes, there are still quality programs that have found success in various sports, but recovering from the loss of brands like USC and UCLA won’t be easy. So it would be fascinating to see what the next step of the conference would be once these two programs exited.
