In an exciting turn of events, 3rd seed and one of the tournament’s favorites, Garbine Muguruza was eliminated from the 2022 Australian Open. The Spaniard lost her second match against the French women Alize Cornet in straight sets of 3-6.3-6 on Rod Laver Arena.

Muguruza is expected to go deep in the tournament thanks to her relatively easy draw and her recent form. She finished last season with a title at the WTA Finals and also made it to the World Top 5 again. Now she will drop a lot of points and will drop to at least 6th place in the WTA Leaderboard.

Cornet, who had not won a match in the previous two tournaments, looked good on the field against Muguruza from the start. She has covered the court well and is using the baseline to her advantage. Her deep hitting strategy works and Muguruza sometimes doesn’t have the answer for her. All Cornet needed was a break serving as she finished the set 6-3.

The 3rd seed needed to break through in the set but the momentum came to the French player. Error string cannot be forced from Muguruza It didn’t help her either. Cornet was given a break midway through the second set and kept her serve fine. In the end, she had another late break and ended the set 6-3 to see the third seed eliminated.

After the match, Muguruza said her serve let her down and gave all the Credits to Cornet for winning the match. Muguruza’s team tested positive for COVID shortly before a trip to Australia in the summer. The Spaniard said that the untimely positive COVID test had caused her to suffer a bit of depression and hindered her practice.

Along with Muguruza’s disqualification, WTA Finals finalist Anett Kontaveit also bowed out of the second round. The Estonians lost to Clara Tauson in consecutive sets on a radiant Thursday morning. This means they have no top 10 players left in the third quarter of the draw.

As for Cornet, she will face the 29th seed Tamara Zidansek or Brit Heather Watson in round three on Saturday. The Frenchwoman has a great opportunity to use her experience and go deep at the Oz Open as her draw has opened.
