Uncharted 5 with Cassie Drake seemingly hinted at in PS5 ads

Nathan Drake tells his daughter about his adventures.

Sony may have just teased its next one Unexplored Play in a new commercial about a supposed end of the PlayStation 5 console shortage. In between vignettes for announced games such Spiderman 2 is a short clip of a woman carrying a torch through a cave, and fans think this may portend a new one Unexplored Play with Nathan Drake’s daughter Cassie.

An entry over on the PlayStation Blog (about VGC) even says that the new PS5 ad “points out the breadth of extraordinary experiences” available on the console, and goes out of its way to challenge players to see if they “can spot all the game references.” The woman in the cave, who is at one point seen blowing dust off a mysterious artifact, appears to be the only part of the commercial that does not correspond to a currently announced or released Playstation exclusive.

The last numbered game in the series, PlayStation 4 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s Endended with a monologue with a playable Cassie Drake. Cassie, the daughter of series protagonists Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher, rummages through memorabilia from their past adventures before finally being caught and convincing her parents to tell the stories of their past lives. Naughty Dog couldn’t have telegraphed more clearly what his potential future plans for the series were.

But that was almost seven years ago at this point. With the exception of the awesome standalone expansion from 2017, Uncharted: The Lost Legacyand the recently remastered Legacy of Thieves Collection, we still haven’t heard a peep from Sony about the future of the series. In fact, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckman said just last week buzz feed The studio had no plans for more games. “We’re done [with Uncharted],” he said. “We’re moving on.”

However, Sony may not be done yet. Multiple job postings last year hinted that Naughty Dog might be working with a new in-house PlayStation team on an existing franchise, while other rumors suggested a potential reboot was in the works. Whichever path a new project took, it’s easy to see why Sony would want to continue the series.

Unknown 4 managed to sell 16 million copies, and even the lackluster Hollywood adaptation grossed nearly four times its budget. At a time when the film, television, and gaming industries are doubling down on established franchises, that’s hard to see Unexploreda precursor to Sony’s recent hot streak in first-party development, left in the vault.
