Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter is a game that has been available on PC for six years and has also been ported to PS4 and Xbox One. Next month it’ll hit the Nintendo Switch, which might not sound like a big deal other than the fact that it’s a port that’s practically a marvel considering what the Ukrainian developers have been through over the last month .
Frogwares, a studio specializing in games based on the exploits of the British detective, is mainly based in Ukraine. and since the Russian invasion, their work – and the lives of their developers – have been thrown into chaos. While team members in remote and overseas offices are safe and able to work from home, others have temporarily left their positions to “become full-time volunteers in humanitarian efforts across the country,” while some have even “joined the Defense Forces.” /will fight against the Russians.
In a statement released by Frogwares to update fans on how they’re doing, the company says:
As you know, Ukraine is engaged in a terrible war with Russia, which, of course, affects the lives of millions of people, including our team members.
Simply put, now more than ever we must keep the studio alive and functioning to the best of our ability. No one on the team is expected to work, only those who can and want to. Some on the team have become full-time volunteers in humanitarian efforts across the country. Others have joined the Defense Forces. The rest are in various safer locations abroad or across the country and have made themselves available to work remotely. We continue to pay all these people on the team. For those who fight or volunteer, each of their places on the team will be waiting for them at the end of the war.
But essentially, it’s a collection of employees who have either fled Ukraine to neighboring EU countries, or those who have relocated to safer areas, that currently keep Frogwares running. We are an independent studio with no outside funding, investors or parent company to keep us afloat. So it’s up to us alone and by supporting our players who want to play our games to keep this studio alive. And as this war drags on, we and the people of all of Ukraine see that even if they are not directly involved in the fighting, they somehow have to move things forward. So when this is all over and it’s time to rebuild and restart, we’re not starting from scratch.
Best regards, your Frogwares team
This team certainly made it through. Even before Frogware’s Sherlock Holmes games had been embroiled in a series of bizarre legal battles against its publisherso having to deal with all that and then a full-scale invasion of your country, and still be able to release a game on the Switch (and some DLC for another title!), is unbelievable.
Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter will be released on April 7th for Nintendo Switch and is available for pre-order now.
