UK cinemas celebrate National Cinema Day as box office recovers

Around 550 cinemas across the UK are celebrating cinema and going to the cinema on 3rd September under the banner of National Cinema Day.

In the initiative, which includes all major UK cinema chains and a host of smaller cinema operators and venues, all participating cinemas will offer tickets to all screenings from £3 ($3.50). The aim is to inspire as large and broad a cinema audience as possible for the cinema experience.

The celebrations come as the UK cinema sector recovers from the pandemic, with both box office and admissions now reaching 80% of the record-breaking levels of 2018 and 2019, the biggest cinema years since 1970.

National Cinema Day was developed by the multi-industry organization Cinema First and is supported by the Film Distributors’ Association and the UK Cinema Association. The event will be promoted through extensive marketing efforts using broadcast, digital and outside channels.

Iain Jacob, Chairman of Cinema First, said: “There seems to be no better time than now to celebrate cinema-going in the UK, one of the country’s most popular leisure activities. After a very strong summer for the industry and the anticipation of further film highlights in the further course of the year, we wanted to give everyone the chance to enjoy the cinema experience with the film of their choice.

While all the evidence confirms that going to the cinema is one of the most affordable and best value leisure options, we also recognize the impact of the current cost of living challenges many households are facing and wanted to do our part to make going to the cinema even more affordable .

I am very grateful for the great support that colleagues across the industry have shown for National Cinema Day, which we very much hope will be a major annual event.” UK cinemas celebrate National Cinema Day as box office recovers
