UFC 269: Oliveira vs. Poirier, prediction: MMA Insiders roll out surprising battle card picks, best bets

Charles Oliveira will defend his lightweight belt Saturday against leading contender and former interim champion Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 269 in Las Vegas. Their battle ended the MMA performance from T-Mobile Arena. UFC 269’s main fight card is set for 10 p.m. ET. Oliveira hasn’t lost in four years and is looking to improve her UFC win streak to 10 in her first title defense. To do so, he will have to overcome Poirier, whose only defeat in his last 10 matches was against the now-retired former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Poirier once held the title provisionally, but was looking for his first unifying crown.
Poirier is the favorite -160 (risk $160 to win $100), while Oliveira is the underdog +140 in Oliveira vs. Latest Poirier from Caesars Sportsbook. In the co-main event, women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (-800) took on challenger Julianna Pena (+575). UFC 269: Oliveira vs. Preview. Poirier
Oliveira (31-8-1) is one of the few late bloomers to have seen their tenacity lead to a world title. The 32-year-old Brazilian has been on the promotion list for 11 years, but at one point he headed towards the gatekeeper position.
In December 2017, he was stopped by cruiser Paul Felder, who is retired, for his fourth loss in six outings. He recovered with a win over veteran Clay Guida.
Oliveira eventually rose to the top of the standings and was selected to fight for the title vacated by Nurmagomedov, who retired with an undefeated record last year. He faced former Bellator titleholder Michael Chandler in May and claimed the crown with a second-round knockout.
Poirier (28-6-1) could be Oliveira’s opponent for the vacant title, but turned down the fight for another big payday against Conor McGregor. The 32-year-old Louisiana-born player takes down McGregor for the second time in 2021 and his star lineup has reached unprecedented heights.
Poirier has long been considered one of the most comprehensive fighters in the game. His résumé includes a double win over featherweight champion Max Holloway, the latter of which earned him the interim belt in April 2019. You can only see who to return here.
UFC 269 prediction
We’ll share one of Gombas’ UFC 269 predictions here: He’ll join Eryk Anders (+130) to drag Andre Muniz’s disappointment (-150) in a middleweight fight.
Anders (14-5-1) is a former College football stand out as the defensive frontman of the Alabama Crimson Tide that beat Texas to win the national title in 2009. He began his MMA career 10-0, but struggled against opponents. upperclassman and had four losses in five matches. But the 34-year-old has lost just once in his last five appearances and scored the winning goal against Darren Stewart in June.
Muniz (21-4) is a two-time “Dana White’s Contender Series” winner, 3-0 in the UFC, with two of those wins coming in extra time. The 31-year-old Brazilian performed lackluster icon Jacare Souza in the first round of their May fight.
“Anders has shown good defence. He’s stronger and a heavier striker. I also support his cardio later in this fight,” Gombas told SportsLine.
