The UConn Huskies and the Stanford Cardinal face off in the Final Four of the NCAA Women’s College Basketball Tournament.
UConn has long been synonymous with dominance in women’s basketball, but this year they come up against a No. 1 in their Final Four match against the Stanford Cardinal as a No. 2.
Stanford and UConn are close in competitiveness: It was Stanford that won the NCAA championship in 2021, which was their third national title and their first since 1992.
But the Huskies are unparalleled in winning, holding a record 11 NCAA championships. Nine of these championships have been repeated in the last two post-millennium decades, with three peats and four peats. Despite their dynastic reputation, the Huskies’ last championship was in 2016, while the Cardinals have come out on top in recent competitions.
The 32-3 Cardinal are heading into their 15th Final Four appearance, while this is the 21st Final Four run for the 29-5 Huskies. Whichever team emerges victorious from this duel is expected to face off against the winner of the Louisville-South Carolina contest, with the Gamecocks considered favorites to win it all for much of the season.
UConn vs. Stanford prediction
According to BetSided, the fact that this game could go either way is backed up by the Vegas odds. Stanford is the favorite by a slight 1.5 point advantage over UConn and it’s widely acknowledged that Stanford has a great roster that has performed well throughout the tournament. UConn, on the other hand, had an impressive 91-point win in double overtime against the NC State Wolfpack with reigning Player of the Year Paige Bueckers at the helm.
Stanford’s defense will challenge UConn, and if their starters lose their footing, it wouldn’t be hard for Stanford to score a few baskets and take the edge. After all, Lacie Hull is unlikely to be scoreless again after 40 minutes, so UConn will need to get an all-world performance from Bueckers and a loaded Stanford unit to keep Geno Auriemma’s dream of yet another national championship alive and to knock away the reigning champions.
forecast: Stanford wins 78-75.
