U.S. Hockey announces final lineup for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, youngest team since 1994

United States Hockey announced The final roster for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is on Thursday, and recognizable names are few and far between. Is not NHL players who formed teams because of the league, in an effort to finish the 2021-22 season on time, opt out of the Game on December 22.

NHL players did not compete in PyeongChang 2018 because planning a disagreement with the IOC, but they’ve been in the previous five Games. Team USA won silver medals at Salt Lake City 2002 and Vancouver 2010 with NHL players on its roster.

Team USA hasn’t been able to get to the podium without NHL players since 1980, when they defeated the Soviet Union in the famous “Miracle on Ice”. The big disappointment inspired the 2004 film “Miracle” starring Kurt Russell as US team coach Herb Brooks.

With the absence of NHL players, Team USA’s 2022 hockey team is the youngest since 1994 and includes teenagers – five to be exact – for the first time in 30 years. Drew Commesso of Boston University, 19, is Team America’s youngest ever goalscorer.

In total, Team USA will bring 15 current NCAA players, eight European experts and two AHL players to Beijing. Michigan’s Matty Beniers – overall #2 pick for the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Draft – and nine-year NHL veteran Steven Kampfer head the roster. KHL winger Brian O’Neill is the team’s only returning Olympic athlete.
