Tyson Fury’s retirement paves the way for the Oleksandr Usyk-Daniel Dubois fight for the WBA heavyweight title

Tyson Fury’s withdrawal from the intended fight against Oleksandr Usyk has resulted in the Ukrainian being called upon to face his mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois for the WBA heavyweight championship.

While Fury and Usyk held talks of an undisputed blockbuster fight, discussions eventually broke down with both sides unable to agree on substantive terms beyond purse sharing.

As a result, Usyk has closed his training camp and will now focus on facing Dubois to defend his titles.

Dubois on the rise: Can he topple Oleksandr Usyk for the WBA heavyweight title?

While Dubois lost his first career fight to Joe Joyce in November 2020, he has since racked up five straight wins, including the WBA heavyweight title over Trevor Bryan.

Dubois has been touted as a possible challenger to Usyk and his camp have held talks with Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk about a potential fight.

When asked if there will be a possible fight against Dubois, Krassyuk said, “The next chance for Usyk is WBA duty, so it’s Daniel Dubois.” He suggested the fight could be in the UK, with London or Manchester would be possible options.

This would be a fitting place for Usyk, who has won all three fights on British soil, including a win over Anthony Joshua to defend his world title in Saudi Arabia.

Dubois has been in impressive form lately, with notable wins over Bogdan Dinu and Joe Cusumano, as well as his capture of the WBA (regular) title. He is determined to make the most of his chance against Usyk and is confident of causing an upset.
