Tyler O’Neill made history on opening day of the Cardinals

Tyler O’Neill had a great opening day, setting a 94-year-old Cardinals record in the process.

St. Louis Cardinals Gold Glove left fielder Tyler O’Neill appeared to pick up where he left off for his club on opening day against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

O’Neill had a five-RBI day for the Cardinals. It’s something no cardinal from St. Louis has done in 94 years.

His five-RBI season opener is something not done since Wally Röttger in 1928.

O’Neill got things going in the first inning with a single-to-second base from JT Brubaker to score Dylan Carlson. While still on the mound in the second round, Brubaker hit a home run to left field, scoring for Harrison Bader and Paul Goldschmidt.

In the eighth inning, O’Neill hit a victim fly to right field and scored again for Carlson.

Aaron Fletcher had an all-around bad outing for the Pittsburgh Pirates in that eighth inning. Tommy Edman hit a home run to left field. The shot was confirmed by a referee’s report. After O’Neill’s deep stall, Nolan Arenado hit his first home run of the year and tapped into Goldschmidt.

Carlson hit a sacrificial fly ahead of Heath Hembree in the sixth inning to score Bader.

The Cardinals won their first game of the year 9-0. Adam Wainwright earned the win for the Cardinals. He pitched six innings, giving up five hits and knocking out six without giving up a run. It was an impressive performance for the 40-year-old starter of the Cards.

Röttger spent four seasons with the Cardinals in the 1920s and ’30s. Like O’Neill, he was an outfielder for the cards. That 1928 season, he played in 68 games and averaged .341/.372/.506 with 17 doubles, six home runs, and 44 RBI.

It should be fun to watch O’Neill throughout the season. He’s primed to have a big season and fight for a third straight Gold Glove.
