Freddie Kraft, Bubba Wallace’s trusted spotter for many years, acknowledged that Ty Gibbs’ back-up runs have been exciting and impressive so far, but pointed out that the transition from Xfinity car to Cup car has reduced his natural aggressiveness. He added that Ty Gibbs should have finished five places up in Indy had he fought harder.

I thought Ty was doing fine. I found him a little too nice to some people. For example, a guy has a position on him, he kind of gave it to him instead of I think if it was an Xfinity car he probably would have fought a little bit harder. I think he could have run five places better than where he finished‘ said Freddie Kraft.

Denny Hamlin, the co-owner of 23X1, interrupted the conversation and suggested that Bubba Wallace could be one of the TRD drivers who used him for the spots, saying: “I think you were all one of them. I think you’ve all used it up.”Do we have?” asked Freddie Kraft after hearing his boss’ opinion.

In response to Kraft, Denny Hamlin revealed that Ty Gibbs told him he had lost three or four places here in the race, pointing out that the two drivers who used him up quite badly, the No. 23 driver and his teammate Bubba Wallace and the most prominent Toyota driver on the grid No. 18 JGR driver Kyle Busch, who Gibbs may or may not replace next year.

Even after the race he does quibbles like, “I lost three places here and four places here… And he says, ‘The 23 and 18 pretty much used me up.’Denny Hamlin remembered Ty Gibbs telling him.

To which Freddie Kraft jokingly replied, “For real? That must have been out of my zone‘ which prompted a laugh in the studio where they were filming the podcast.

Denny Hamlin went on to give his opinion on what he sees ahead for Ty Gibbs in the Cup Series, pointing out that there will be some tough years for the youngster as the Xfinity Series and Cup Series have such a huge difference exhibit, which is a great limitation on him. He added that he could only get better in the cup series with a project and a test by fire.

It’s going to be tough a few years and I’m trying to tell Ty, ‘Dude, the fence between Xfinity and Cup is really high. These guys don’t hang around here. You miss a corner, the difference between qualifying 10 and 25. Xfinity series go back to 12th. It will be a project. It will certainly take some time, but I think the Crucible is the best way‘ Denny Hamlin said.
