Two women who stood and watched a veteran being eaten alive learn their fate

Two women have been sentenced to a year in prison after it was discovered they allowed their dog to eat an elderly army veteran alive.
Hayley Sulley and Della Woods reportedly starved their dog for two days before he attacked 79-year-old Clifford Clarke.

Sulley and Woods ignored their dog Charlie for two days and allowed him to roam freely in their yard. When neighbor Clifford Clarke opened his door, the dog ran and mauled him to death.

Before Clarke was eaten alive, the dog was so hungry that he tried to eat a plastic bowl and some cigarette butts. Police were called when a neighbor noticed the dog foaming at the mouth, but by the time they got there, Clarke had already been eaten by the starving dog.

Police say the dog even tried to eat the end of the gun that killed him. The brutal murder has been described in court cases as the dog appears to have literally amputated one of Clarke’s arms.

“I am convinced that this horrific and energetic attack on Mr Clarke was completely avoidable,” Justice Mark Brown told the women in court. “Mr Clarke was literally eaten alive by Charlie when the dog ingested large amounts of tissue and this is a very shocking, appalling and tragic event. Mr Clarke suffered a horrific death and you have taken the love and camaraderie away from his family that he would have given him.”

Prosecutor Gary Simpson said the women deserved their punishment for allowing their dog to get to the point where it did, which ultimately ended in the death of an innocent man.

“This was a vicious attack on a defenseless man who was powerless to defend himself against this large and powerful dog,” Simpson said. “Fortunately, the guilty pleas of these two women brought this case to a relatively quick conclusion and spared Mr Clarke’s relatives the ordeal of a trial. Hayley Sulley and Della Woods were both responsible for the dog’s welfare and behavior on that fateful day. Their failure to ensure the dog was cared for and under control resulted in the death of a man and they are now coming to terms with it. Our thoughts are with Mr Clarke’s family at this sad time.”

Once they have served their prison sentence, both Sulley and Woods will never be allowed to own a dog again. Two women who stood and watched a veteran being eaten alive learn their fate
