No one mentioned the name Seth Rich on Fox News for several years, and for good reason. The Democratic National Committee employee tragically passed away, whose unsolved murder fueled an evil conspiracy theory linking him to the DNC hack during the 2016 election. was a Fox News coverage of 2017. That attempt persisted until the network was forced to withdraw its reporting and sued by his surviving family.
According to the conspiracy theory, cherished by supporters Donald Trump and covered incessantly in the right-wing media, Russia did not hack the DNC and send Hillary Clinton’s emailed Wikileaks, which then published a series of those communications shortly before the 2016 election; Rich was the source of the leak, unfounded theories were put forward, and as a result he was murdered.
The 27-year-old was shot dead in Washington DC in July 2016. The murder remains unsolved, but police have clarified: there is no evidence Rich was killed because he sent hacked DNC emails to Wikileaks . His family, meanwhile, have begged that the right-wing media stop promoting the alternative theory of his killing.
Fox News included this hypothesis in both an online and broadcast report, with permission from hosts like Sean Hannity. The network withdrew that report and was sued by Seth Rich’s family, stated in a lawsuit that the report intentionally caused emotional distress.
A Fox News spokesperson said: “We are pleased with how the complaints have been resolved and hope this helps the Rich find some peace and solace in the future.”
But then, on Monday night, the Fox News host Tucker Carlson revived that very conspiracy theory.
In a segment that reviewed the claims of Hillary Clinton Russia hacked the DNC, Carlson said:
[Clinton] says Russia has been involved in cyberattacks on the United States, and that is probably true in fact. But she is talking about a specific ‘cyber attack’. She’s talking about the Russians hacking the servers at DNC. Democrats have wasted three years of our lives telling us that, with increasing numbers. This is interesting. It is not true. It was never true. Vladimir Putin does not hack DNC. There was never any evidence that the Russians hacked the DNC. Instead, the DNC emails were clearly stolen from inside the building, most likely because a Bernie Sanders supporter wanted to show the world that Bernie Sanders was taken by corrupt Washington forces, who how the latter set a trap for Donald Trump. It was obvious to anyone paying attention at the time. Interestingly, no one was punished for that.
What we know is Robert Mueller’s The Special Counsel’s investigation did indeed uncover Russia was behind the DNC hack. American intelligence agencies also agree with that assessment.
Mueller indicted 12 Russian military officials in 2018 for the hack. Upon publication of the indictment, Rod RosensteinDeputy Attorney General under the President Donald Trump, speak Russian officials hacked the DNC, another congressional campaign committee, and accessed the email accounts of Clinton campaign staff:
The defendants accessed the email accounts of volunteers and staff of the US presidential campaign, including the campaign chairman, starting in March 2016. They also hacked into the network. computers of the congressional lobbying committee and the national political committee. The defendants secretly monitored computers, implanted hundreds of files containing malicious computer code, and stole emails and other documents.
The theory that Rich was behind the DNC leak, not Russia, has long been used as a way to exempt Russia from meddling in the 2016 election, which in turn would exempt Trump from being the presidential candidate. my favorite Vladimir Putin.
But theory is always based on no basis. The consequence of promoting it is torturing a grieving family. Fox News did the bare minimum by withdrawing Seth Rich’s original reporting, stopping the story from airing, and paying a sum of money to the Rich family.
When this network reaches an agreement with the Rich Sons in 2020, By Washington Post Erik Wemple Written that “Fox News has an enormous moral obligation to the Rich in this case. Hannity’s actions alone resulted in his immediate dismissal from any ethical news agency. Instead, he stays in his perch every night on Fox News. ”
Two years later, and that moral obligation is gone, when Seth Rich’s conspiracy theories have been revived by a Fox News host.
