True Colors is selling Venice Horizons’ opener “Princess”.

Italian distributor True Colors has taken over the international sales of Venice Horizons’ opener “Princess,” a dark drama about a young victim of the African sex trade, directed by Italian auteur Roberto De Paolis.

De Paolis, whose 2017 debut Pure Hearts got off to a positive start from Cannes, recently credited the film diversity how “the unfiltered story of a young Nigerian woman who prostitutes herself in a pine forest by the sea in Ostia, outside Rome.”

Princess features (see preview trailer above). glory kevin, a real victim of the sex trade, in the title role plus other amateur actors from similar backgrounds. The cast is rounded off Lino Musella (“The Young Pope”), Salvatore Striano (“Caesar Must Die”) and Maurizio Lombardi (“The New Pope”).

De Paolis calls “princess” in his press releases “the result of merging my perspectives with those of the young Nigerian women I have met over a long period of time while researching for the film.”

“The women who wrote the screenplay with me and then acted are real victims of human trafficking itself freely,” adds the director, pointing out that “it created a new, flexible workspace: together we experimented and found what I think is a more authentic way than other representations we are often used to when it comes to migration, illegal immigrants and Prostitution.”

Furthermore, “the narrative is always balanced between the true story of a degraded reality and the lyrical tale of the wounded humanity,” added De Paolis. “The film is more of a coming-of-age story because ‘Princess’ is primarily a 19-year-old woman who, while holding on to her confidence, tries to resist the wildness of the world.”

Princess is produced by De Paolis’ Young Films Shingle and Indigo Film with the support of RAI Cinema and will be published in Italy by Lucky Red. Pic will open Venice Horizons on August 31st. True Colors is selling Venice Horizons’ opener “Princess”.
