Trevor Lawrence is struggling, and Jaguar just doesn’t seem equipped to help him – The Athletic

INDIANAPOLIS – Deep in the bowels of Lucas Oil Stadium, the middle of a dressing room dominated by frustration, player after player searches for the rookie defender who is carrying a load that would make even the the strongest of us buckling.

Every player has the same goal: Raise Trevor Lawrence. This loss – another loss – is not his, the other 52 Jacksonville Jaguars tried to convey to young players the dynamics of the team’s franchise. At the time, those teammates demonstrated the selfless sense of responsibility that every coach looks for from a team.

Thing is, Lawrence will benefit more from this much needed support on the field than from it.

He needs fewer pats on the back and more clutch catches. He needed fewer picks up for me and more picks up faster. He needs no more words of encouragement; he needs less punishment.

In their 23-17 loss first Colts on Sunday, the Jaguars embody a team that has placed their young defender in a losing position. Now, there is concern about the cost that loss and repeated omissions might take for Lawrence. His mental state is questionable at the moment as far as his head coach is concerned.

“Of course,” Urban Meyer said when asked if he was worried about Lawrence’s psyche. “He has the second or third most votes for the captaincy. (Teammate) loves him. Name a guy who works harder. We welcome each other. So it’s neat to see what happened after that. But heck yeah, I worry about that. He has a lot on his shoulders right now. That’s why everyone around him has to play a little bit better, the coach a little bit better.
