Towing with an electric vehicle is made easier by an Australian company

Australian EV owners looking to tow something currently have little to no genuine factory supported options that are readily available and not overly expensive.

That’s where Brisbane-based company EV Towing Australia comes in, with their locally manufactured towbars and cable kits for certain electric vehicles like the Tesla Model Y and BYD Atto 3, which aim to make the ordering and installation process easier and cheaper too.

EV Towing Australia owner Nicholas Carney told CarExpert the idea for the deal came after he bought his Tesla Model Y and was told shipping would cost around $700 for the towing kit alone. It wouldn’t arrive until the first quarter of next year, either.

With that in mind, it makes sense that the first tow and cable kit the company produced was for the Tesla Model Y, which has a braked towing capacity of 1600kg and a maximum hitch load of 160kg.

This EV Towing Australia towing and cable kit for the Model Y costs $1500, which is $470 cheaper than the real Tesla towing kit, which the website says is still listed as “coming soon”.

EV Towing Australia also currently offers towing solutions for the BYD Atto 3, Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3 and BMW iX. More will be announced in the future.

Mr Carney said the company could manufacture a towing and wiring kit within a month’s timeframe.

All towing kits that EV Towing Australia sells are made from Australian structural steel and are manufactured and powder coated in Brisbane. They are all also covered by a lifetime guarantee.

The towbars themselves are designed to withstand around 20 tonnes, according to Mr Carney, although legally no electric vehicle owner could do so.

Most tow kits come with a plug and play wiring harness that is powered by the taillights and has its own electronic control unit (ECU).

Mr Carney pointed out that the company previously had some issues with the iX’s electrical CANBUS system, which required special coding.

All EV Towing Australia towing kits are designed to bolt directly to the car with no cutting or welding required.

They can be shipped anywhere in Australia and installed by fitter partners in any state.

Mr Carney said you could even have the towing and electrical kit sent home as he wanted to give owners the ability to do it themselves if they wanted to. He added the hardest part was removing the rear bumper and plastic panels.

As previously reported, EV sales are skyrocketing as they hit a record-breaking 7.7 percent market share in September, according to VFACTS data. They sold both hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars together.

The Tesla Model Y was the third best-selling vehicle and the best-selling midsize SUV this month, and the Model 3 was the best-selling midsize luxury car.

There’s also a ship with “well over” 4,000 new Teslas that is reportedly due to dock in New South Wales ahead of Christmas, which would be the largest Tesla shipment ever delivered to Australia.
