Toro Y Moi unveils Goes by So Fast short film starring Eric Andre

Toro y Moi, also known as Chaz Bear, has officially released Goes By So Fast: A Mahal Film, a short film starring Eric André and Chaz which it announced “enters the world of Toro y Moi’s seventh studio album. Mahal, to life.” The film is a collaboration with Dropbox and directed by longtime Toro y Moi collaborator Harry Israelson, written by Sidney Schleiff and Israelson, and produced by Ways & Means.

Israelson says, “Having worked with Chaz for over a decade, there was this natural evolution in our storytelling; We’ve been talking about a companion film with Mahal from day one. For me the idea was to create a world around the record so the listener could stick their head inside the album cover itself and look around. Our challenge was to make a film that was reminiscent of the album’s themes and lyrics, and I think we created something really weird and unique together.”

Chaz adds, “Given the album’s more serious subject matter, Harry and I both thought it appropriate to come up with something humorous and fun. I wanted to do something that would humanize the music and hopefully myself in some way. Knowing I’m not a great actor and a bit reticent, we thought it best to find a supporting actor that would give some context to the “man behind the curtain”. We found that Eric Andre’s character, Panther, was the perfect highly sporadic energy that suited my personality and gave context to my introverted tendencies. I loved the whole process and I think fans will be able to see how much fun we had.”

Mahal follows South Carolina-raised, Bay Area-based Toro’s 2019 album Outer Peace, along with his Grammy-nominated 2020 collaboration with Flume, The Difference, which also featured in a global campaign for Apple’s Airpods was presented. Since 2008 he has released nine albums and has collaborated with Tyler, the Creator, Travis Scott, Haim and Caroline Polachek. As a graphic designer, he has worked with brands such as Nike, Dublab and Vans.
