There are plenty of great players who have won an NFL pitch in the first 80 years of the league’s existence, but who is the best of the best?

There were some great players to grace an NFL gridiron in the last millennium, but who was the best of the best? Today, we look at 30 of the best players of the 1900s.

Who were the best NFL players of the 1900s?

30. Chuck Bednarik

End the list with the complement of all returned parts. Bednarik was the last true two-way player in league history. 1 overall pick in the 1949 draft playing as a central attacking and defensive midfielder. He was a 10-time All-Pro in his thirteen seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, and also an eight-time Pro Bowler. Bednarik was arguably the most important piece of both the teams that won in 1949 and 1960.

We can’t talk about Bedarik without mentioning two other players; Jim Taylor and Frank Gifford. In the final game of his professional career, Bednarik tackled Taylor with less than 10 seconds left. He then refuses to break out of the Packers star, let the clock hit three zeros and end the game.

However, the play that made Bednarik most notorious was his match with the Giants and Frank Gifford. Bedarnik threw Gifford to the ground with his head, knocking him unconscious. What happened next was the catalyst of one of the most iconic images in football history, with Bednarik standing over Gifford and pointing at his prone body.

The playing caused Gifford to miss a year and a half of playing, and cemented Bednarik as one of the toughest players in professional football history. | Top 30 NFL Players of the 1900s
