Top 10 Nintendo Switch Exclusive Games

The Nintendo Switch is arguably one of the most innovative gaming systems to date. Working as both a handheld portable system and a home console, the Switch uses its technology to improve the library experience tenfold. The transfer from the TV to the portable device does not sacrifice much in graphics, so the stunning engines and mechanics of these games are not lost along the way. Sometimes there is nothing more satisfying than playing an open world game on a plane, or a racing game in the car, or a cozy JRPG in bed.

Here are our 10 favorite games that you can only get on the Nintendo Switch – or as we like to call it, “The Best Console of the Last 10 Years”.

Exclusive top Nintendo Switch games

The Nintendo Switch offers a whole host of great games, from open-world adventures to dating sims to help you in your love life. No matter what your favorite genre is, there’s something on console to take away that itch. Here are just some of the best games to choose from.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

People play games for all sorts of reasons: to engage in stories, to feel powerful, to exercise their brains. Animal Crossing: New Horizons doesn’t do any of that, but it does offer the most relaxing and peaceful atmosphere to hang out. Pretty much all you do is move to an island, meet new animal friends, and build some stuff and collect bugs. There’s literally no way to lose, and the worst thing that can happen to you is get stung by a bee and have a droopy eye for a while. The best part? It’s endless. Animal Crossing: New Horizons keeps adding new content and can seemingly go on forever without ever getting bored – as long as you’re up for the relaxed pace and low-stakes activities. Really, you can do whatever you want with your Animal Crossing: New Horizons experience. You can live in a tent for months doing nothing but fishing or decorating your home. It depends on you!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Okay, maybe we’re getting off on the wrong foot here. Technically, Breath of the Wild came out on the Wii U, but this massive and innovative entry into the long-running Zelda franchise was a big selling point for the Nintendo Switch when it first launched in 2017 (selling was something as for the Wii U, decided not particularly well). The importance of this game to the console cannot be underestimated, and the fact is that it’s still the absolute best game in this field. Breath of the Wild features open-world exploration, atmospheric and tranquil environments, an intricate combat system, and some of the best physics-based puzzles we’ve seen. The story is a little beside the point, but the thrill of exploring (or coming back to) Hyrule never gets old.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The vast majority of people might not have thought that Fire Emblem, the hardcore tactical role-playing game franchise, would be such a hit, but it certainly has – and for good reasons. Many games require you to play through multiple games to see everything it has to offer, but Three Houses is one of the few that really makes you want to play it. Each can last up to 100 hours, but it’s all so beautifully designed that it never gets old. Mixing social sim mechanics with hardcore tactics works well here, in no small part due to the great writing and excellent cast of characters.

Octopathic Traveler

The most visible aspect of Octopath Traveler is its mix of retro and modern graphics. It’s definitely nostalgic, but it really works and it’s a beautiful game. The fractured approach to storytelling might leave something to be desired, but for extremely good turn-based combat (and a great soundtrack) check out this nice recap.

turn 2

If you’re looking for a different kind of competitive experience, you might want to check out Splatoon 2. While it’s fun to play alone, it really shines as a multiplayer game and is one of the few titles that seems to perform even better in handheld mode. It makes interesting use of the Switch’s motion controls and has a quirky take on the shooting mechanics that’s fun for all ages.

Super Mario Maker 2

Too much Mario? Pity! This is Nintendo, after all, and Super Mario Maker 2 is the brand at its finest. Super Mario Maker 2 lets you create your own Mario levels and play through the work of others to create an endless (and sometimes exceedingly challenging) classic Super Mario experience.

Super Mario Odyssey

Odyssey is one of the most unique experiences players will have in a Mario game. It plays similarly to previous adventures but with a twist – you can use Mario’s hat to own and control other characters to help in the progression of each stage. Would you like to control a realistic looking T-Rex? Throw a hat on it. Want to stack some Goombas on top of each other so Mario can reach a higher platform? Throw a hat on it. Although the story is nothing new, the game mechanics are implemented so well that they create a unique, strange and wonderfully entertaining experience.

Super Mario Party

Continuing the classic gameplay of its predecessors of the same name, Super Mario Party for the Switch is one of the most entertaining party games of all time, providing players with hours of entertainment on the couch. The classic mode is back, along with various multiplayer and online modes that showcase the vast archive of minigames. It’s a fun, competitive board game that’s perfect for the Nintendo Switch and the plethora of controllers you and your friends are likely to have.

Super Smash Brothers Ultimate

The popular crossover fighting game returns to the Switch with fantastic gameplay and a return to its roots. Many fans of the series loved Super Smash Brothers Melee but were less positive about Brawl, feeling that it was more geared towards casual fans and lacked the challenge that the previous titles had. Ultimate balances these impulses well, adding new characters to an already large roster to choose from and a variety of combat cards. There’s a new single-player campaign called World of Light, but you can always choose to play the classic competitive game types in the same room with friends or on-the-go in the portable, handheld version. Both play fantastic. It’s a great introduction to the franchise and a good starting point for newcomers.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Similar to previous titles in the Xeno series, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is an epic fantasy JRPG that you should not miss if you are a fan of the genre. The game is a strong story-driven title for those looking for a deeper storyline and single-player experience. With beautiful environments, large set pieces and a really interesting combat system, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a rewarding experience on the Switch, whether portable or at home.
