Tomas Krupa to direct eco-documentary We Have to Survive

Slovak director Tomáš Krúpa has started production of his creative documentary We Have to Survive. The Slovak-French-Austrian co-production captures stories about the impact of climate change from all corners of the world while leaving the smallest possible carbon footprint, reports Film New Europe.

“By choosing local stories, we strive for social and ethnic diversity,” Krúpa told FNE. “We want to have representatives of different races and cultures so that the film has global narrative value. The mosaic-like structure of the story allows viewers to peer into the lives of several characters and their families in places where climate change has long been occurring.”

The development of the 100-minute documentary started at the end of 2019 and was slowed down by the pandemic. Production is planned for three years. Filming has begun on location in the US and Mongolia while Greenland and Australia are still in the scouting phase.

“We Have to Survive” aims to convey a message about how global warming is affecting everyday life. The basic idea is that there is no predetermined destiny, only the future that we create. The effects of heat, drought, expanding deserts and floods are the main elements the film deals with.

“We try to implement the project with the lowest possible carbon footprint, so we turned to an eco-expert with whom we monitor the CO2 data during production. We try to eliminate [the carbon output] and finally compensate with CO² offsets,” said Krúpa.

The film is scheduled for completion in 2025. Filmtopia brings him to Slovakia.
