BOSTON (CBS) – Official Tom Brady announced retirement on Tuesday morning, send a long paragraph Instagram post to break the news broke over the weekend. The future Hall of Famer used eight Instagram slides to make the announcement and thank everyone.
But there’s a sizable group that’s missing from Brady’s announcement. And a pretty significant group there, most of which had the biggest influence on Brady’s 22-year NFL career. That would be the New England Patriots, the franchise that Brady spent two decades in and carried six Super Bowl banners.
Brady thanked his Buccaneers teammates for a fun two years. He thanked the Bucs fans, the city of Tampa and the St.Petersburg region.
“It’s great to be a resident of a fun place to live. I want to be invited to our next boat parade! ‘ Brady wrote.
He thanked the Glazer family and GM Jason Licht of Tampa Bay. He even thanked Bruce Arians, who he reportedly didn’t get along with at all that he was during his final season. He thanked the Bucs coaches and staff, and of course, Alex Guerrero. He thanked his agent, his parents and his wife and children.
But nowhere in the announcement is there any mention of the New England Patriots or New England fans. Noisy.
No thanks go to Robert Kraft or Bill Belichick. Not to mention any of his former Patriots teammates or New England fans. It was clear that Brady had put a lot of thought into this announcement, and New England’s omission was no mistake.
Hours after Brady announced his retirement – and after Patriots fans reacted harshly to his removal from the announcement – Brady sent a quick thank-you message to the Patriots via his Instagram story. Brady shared Robert Kraft’s statement Tuesday and wrote, “Thank you Patriots and Patriots. Apart from Gratitude and Love you all. ”

Shortly after, he tweeted the same message:
Thank You Patriots Nation ❤️
I’m so grateful. I love you all. https://t.co/kXm2ET27Dk

Brady also sent a long and heartfelt goodbye to the Patriots as he leaves New England in 2020, thank you Kraft, Belichick and the entire organization. He’s probably waiting to make a longer statement about the Patriot this time around. There are speculations that he could even sign a one-day contract so he can retire as a Patriot, and maybe he’s planning on thanking New England much larger. It would be fitting, as he has spent 20 years of his life for the team and in the region.
But for now, the initial omission is a confusing exclusion in one of the most important announcements in Tom Brady’s life.
