Today’s top NHL picks and predictions (Back Lightning, Avalanche, Jets on Wednesday)

Want to get in on the action in the NHL on a Wednesday night?

BetSided’s Matt De Saro has told you three picks using odds via WynnBET for tonight’s blocker in hockey:

While the Avalanche and Blues were locked in battle atop the division, Jets and Stars are playing for a place in the middle of the herd. The teams are four points apart with the Stars sitting fifth in Central behind Nashville. Both teams are also on a modest two-game winning streak going into Wednesday night.

Another thing these two teams share is high-quality talent between the pipelines. Jake Oettinger is expected to start for Dallas and Connor Hellebuyck is given a nod by Winnipeg. Oettinger has the upper hand here with a savings of .921 for the year and has only allowed two goals in his last two starts to combine. However, both are very competent at what they do.

While the stats do me favor the All-Stars, Dallas hasn’t been doing so well this season with just 20-32 ATS. At home, they are 12-15 ATS and are conceding -0.79 goals on average. Winnipeg looked stronger last week and picked up some nice wins over the Golden Knights and the Coyotes. I will take the opportunity to let their strong play continue tonight in a game they need to win if they hope to have a place in Central.

Lean: Jets +125 to win – Matt De Saro

Only way Red Wings can win this game is by blocking the aggressive behavior of Avalanche. Because they have a poor attack, they can’t count on scoring to get them right into this late game. They have to try to do it in defense, but unfortunately their defense is only slightly better than the attack. Essentially, they’ll need to have their best game of the season to win this one while they wait for total demise from Colorado.

The Red Wings averaged just 29.1 shots on target per game and didn’t create enough high-risk situations to pose much of a threat. Defensively, they are the seventh-highest scorer in the league and let in close to 33 shots per game. The Avalanche are one of the best scorers in the NHL and average 3.04 goals per 60 minutes. This means the Red Wings can’t make 33 shots tonight or they’ll be slaughtered. Colorado will also have their best goalkeeper in Darcy Kuemper between the pipes tonight to check for minor fouls.

This will not end well for Detroit.

Pick: Avalanche -1.5 (-140) – Matt De Saro

Edmonton’s crushing loss to a good Minnesota team reminded me that the Oilers weren’t a great team. While beating the bad teams is important, you also have to beat the good teams, and the Oilers haven’t shown the ability to do that on a regular basis. Their scoring ability is unmatched by any of the best shooters in the league and the 22nd worst scoring defense in the NHL. They attack well but are consistently defeated by defense and play poorly between the pipes with a save rate of 0.898.

Tampa Bay, on the other hand, is packed with end-to-end talent and is the sixth-best goal-scorer in the NHL and allows for at least sixth goals per game at an average of 2.53. They also have a Venetian winner keeping it in goal, who is never an easy game for opposing teams. I think Lightning is ready to get back to their home rock business and get off to a hot start in this tournament.
