Tisha Campbell took to Zoom and chatted with Hot 97’s ‘Ebro in the Morning’ this week about her new upcoming Netflix show ‘Uncoupled’.
The show follows actor Neil Patrick Harris on his journey of self-discovery after splitting from a long-term partner. While discussing the idea of the show, Tisha admitted she referenced it heavily, saying, “I was with someone for 26 years.”
Tisha spent nearly 30 years of her life in a relationship with All of Us actor Duane Martin. When the relationship ended, she realized that it was important for her to find herself again.
“Rediscovering yourself outside of the labels is one of the most devastating things you can go through,” she told the hosts.
The “Martin” actress has been open about how unexpectedly rewarding it has been to maneuver life after her divorce, claiming, “I’ve seen this all along, but it’s a beautiful devastation.”
In her interview, Campbell explained the process a person goes through after divorce and compared it to the five stages of grief as they begin to move on with their lives.
After processing her grief, Tisha finally felt an “awakening.” Sometimes you have to go through zero to rise.”
Tisha Campbell and Duane Martin were married for 22 years before separating in 2016 and Tisha filing for divorce in 2018. People magazine reported at the time how an unnamed person close to the couple described the split: “It’s been getting harder and harder for them for the past two years. It’s one of those things that they’ve talked about and fought against and tried to get to conscious decoupling.”
In 2019, it was revealed that Tisha had filed and received a restraining order against her ex-husband for his alleged violent behavior. TMZ reported, “Duane began physically, emotionally and mentally abusing Tisha in 1996 early in their marriage. She says he berated her for her weight and inability to get roles.”
Tisha also claimed her estranged husband “once hit her in the chest with a closed fist.”
During her 2020 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tisha sat down with Kevin Frazier and spoke about how the divorce changed her and how she was left with just $7 after the divorce was finalized.
“No one knows, but I had nothing. In the bank? Nothing.”
Tisha has moved on about her divorce, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to mingle anytime soon. She admitted in her Hot 97 interview that she’s received some “certain images in my DMS slipping through and through,” but doesn’t want to see any of it.
At the end of the interview, Tisha says how the show sheds light on how a breakup is “more than just a breakup from one person, it’s from a whole group.”
Uncoupled is scheduled to premiere July 29 with eight episodes.
