Tilda Swinton makes a political statement at the Venice Film Festival

The issue of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, one of the topics of discussion at the Venice Film Festival, bubbled to the surface again on Tuesday when Tilda Swinton, who wore hair dyed yellow, made a statement.

“I’m honored to carry half of the Ukrainian flag,” Swinton said at the press conference for Joanna Hogg’s The Eternal Daughter, when a journalist complimented her. Swinton explained that it was also an honor later in the conference. The star wore a light blue top to complement the dark blue of the Ukrainian flag.

Filmed during lockdown, The Eternal Daughter follows an artist and her elderly mother as they confront long-buried secrets as they return to a former family home-turned-hotel haunted by its mysterious past. Swinton plays both mother and daughter. The names of mother and daughter in the film are Rosalind and Julie, the names of Swinton and her real-life daughter Honor Swinton Byrne in Hogg’s The Souvenir and The Souvenir Part II.

Hogg said the seed for the eternal daughter was planted in 2008 when she read Rudyard Kipling’s 1904 short story “They,” which brought her to tears. In this story, the narrator, a grieving father, visits a mysterious house inhabited by children’s ghosts. Like much of Hogg’s work, The Eternal Daughter is an unscripted, improvised work.

“Joanna and I talked to each other a lot [‘The Souvenir’] years about our interest in this particular generation – the gap between our mothers’ generation and women our age,” said Swinton.

Hogg praised Swinton’s “bravery” in playing the two parts in the same voice rather than different voices.

“The Eternal Daughter” is in the main competition in Venice. A24 handles international sales.
