The dental hygiene expert urged everyone to keep the toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible, as rinsing can create an aerosol effect that could cause germs to be thrown through the air.

“Everyone needs to know this about their toothbrush,” Brown said.

“If you could see your toilet and your toothbrush in the same vision without moving your head, there is a 99.99 percent chance that you have feces on your toothbrush.

“Aerosols from your toilet spray up into the air and get everywhere, including on your toothbrush.”

Closing the toilet lid can help reduce the amount of bacteria that can end up on toothbrushes in the bathroom.

‘I’m disgusted’

His video has been viewed more than 1.2 million times – many horrified by the “life-changing discovery”.

“So disgusted to know this and knowing I can see my toilet – thanks I’ll change that,” one woman said, along with a crying emoji.

Another said: “Ever since I learned how to do that as a kid I’ve been telling people to shut the toilet while they flush… I hate when people come over and don’t do it.”

One wrote: “I get angry when I have guests and they don’t put down the toilet seat cover before flushing in the only bathroom I have – where I keep my toothbrush.”

While another added, “My bathroom is small so I keep my toothbrush and all dental products in a drawer and we close the toilet seat before we flush.”

Disturbing reason

Australian scientist Karl Kruszelnicki previously explained that when an open-topped toilet is flushed, “a polluted cloud of bacteria and water vapor simply comes out of the flush toilet bowl”.

In a TikTok video, he said the germ plumes escaping from flushed toilet water were described as “a poor town during an overnight air raid.”

“Now the pudgy water particles … will float around in your bathroom for a couple of hours before eventually they all land — they’ll land,” he explained.

“And some of them might even end up on your toothbrush.

“So if you flush with the toilet seat open, you could be brushing your teeth with toilet water.”

dr Karl concluded with a statement that those in favor of lowering the lid should welcome.

“I think that’s a way to get the men in your household to let the lid down,” he said.
