Thyroid Cancer Symptoms: ‘Young, Fit, and Healthy’ Mom Shares Unusual Warning Signs Before Shock Diagnosis

A woman who was battling thyroid cancer at 27 shared the symptoms she ignored weeks before her diagnosis – including dry skin and brittle hair.

Christina McKnight, now 35, gave little thought to her symptoms for weeks and was only diagnosed after her husband Matthew “forced” her to see a doctor.

She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the fall of 2014 — despite having no family history and being “young, fit and healthy.”

Christina, who now has a five-year-old son, thought her symptoms were a result of stress after getting a promotion at a commercial bank.

But her fatigue, brain fog, and brittle hair were all signs of something far more sinister.

“It was one of those things that I never thought would happen to me,” said Christina, a content creator from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

“I was young, fit and healthy. I just ran a half marathon, did CrossFit for three years, and had no known family history of thyroid disease at all.

“I was feeling very tired right now and had a lot of brain fog, but I thought it was just because of my promotion.

“Then my husband noticed how tired I was and my disinterest in things like the gym, which I usually love.”

Christina says she “couldn’t get as much done” as she used to and even went to work on Sundays to catch up because her “brain was so foggy.”

“My hair got weirdly brittle and my skin got dry too,” she said.

“I always wiped everything away.

“My husband knew something was wrong and asked me to make an appointment with a doctor – which I canceled twice because I was too busy.

“I ended up going to the doctor — mostly to placate my husband.”

Christina is grateful that her doctor recognized her symptoms.

“He felt my neck and found a lump I wasn’t even aware of and got the diagnosis rolling,” she said.

She then had an ultrasound and a biopsy which confirmed she had thyroid cancer.

thyroidectomy

She was initially reluctant to accept the diagnosis because her thyroid had to be removed.

The thyroid in the neck produces vital hormones that regulate metabolism, energy levels, heart rate and body temperature.

As an athlete and runner, Christina was reluctant to go the distance.

But a second opinion confirmed she had thyroid cancer.

She had a thyroidectomy in November 2014, followed by radioactive iodine ablation treatment in January 2015 to remove all remnants of her thyroid.

A year later she was given the all-clear, but had to have a thyroid replacement injection because of the hormones.

“It was surreal because cancer is such a big word,” said Christina, who shares her experience with her 102,000 followers on TikTok.

“It was such a shock and I just thought this can’t be. It was a weird feeling.

“Often they say that thyroid cancer occurs in older people and that it’s hereditary, but that wasn’t the case for me.”

Medical Checks

Christina encourages women to listen to their bodies.

“I’m not telling my story to scare people, but to remind them to be alert if you notice any changes and to see a doctor,” she said.

“Fortunately, I’m fine and my husband made sure I saw a doctor.

“But I never thought that fatigue and dry hair were cancer.

“It’s so important to be aware of these lesser-known symptoms and not assume it wouldn’t happen to you.

“Listen to those around you and listen to changes in your body – these could save your life.”
