Three men were removed from Virgin Australia flight by AFP at Darwin airport

A Virgin Australia flight had to be diverted and three passengers were taken away by police after getting drunk and smoking vape during the flight.

The men were on a flight from Brisbane to Denpasar, Indonesia, on Friday when cabin crew were concerned about their “escalating disruptive behavior.”

According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), a 42-year-old and two 20-year-olds were believed to have been intoxicated during the flight and staff were concerned the passengers, who were seated in the exit row, would not be able to pull themselves together provide assistance in an emergency.

Cabin crew asked the men to move the seats, but reportedly the men initially refused.

When they finally switched seats, their disorderly behavior intensified as they consumed the duty-free alcohol they had brought on board.

“A passenger was also allegedly spotted steaming in his seat,” AFP said.

The plane’s captain decided to divert the flight to Darwin, fearing that the group’s behavior would continue to deteriorate.

AFP officials met the plane upon arrival and escorted the three men off the flight “without incident” at 4 p.m. Friday.

Then the flight continued to Denpasar.

The Queensland men were approached by police and released from custody – potentially facing fines.

Darwin Airport Commander Superintendent Greg Davis said disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and “airports are not nightclubs”.

“We know that the majority of passengers are doing the right thing and that their journey should not be disrupted by bad behavior by some individuals or by feeling unsafe,” he said.

“We do not tolerate abusive and aggressive behavior at airports and on airplanes.”
