Nintendo opened the floodgates today and unleashed a flood of information about it upcoming party shooter, turn 3. In addition to revealing 12 new maps, a Wednesday Direct also showcased new weapons, personal lockers, and shops galore. Splatfests are also confirmed, this time with three idols at the helm. It was a lot. And we haven’t even gotten to the swollen crustaceans.

turn 3 will be released on September 9th, and with just one month left, fans finally got a long-overdue in-depth look at what to expect from the latest entry in the paintball-inspired online shooter. The story is still mostly under wraps, but pretty much everything else you’d want to know has been laid out in it today’s 30 minute presentation. Let’s break it down.

Turf War lets you do a barrel roll

The game’s main 4v4 mode returns, but with some additional tweaks. The mode revealed two new abilities today. Squid Surge lets you swim up a wall in a single push, and Squid Roll lets you jump out of ink and reverse direction while dodging incoming enemy fire.

One of the new weapons is an energy drink machine

While some main and special weapons will return, the Splatlands also have their own unique arsenal:

  • Tri-Stringer: Bow that charges and fires in three directions
  • Splatana Wiper: Sword that charges as it swings to fire inking blades
  • Tacticooler: Fridge that provides stat-boosting energy drinks to the entire team
  • Breakwater: Radar that pings enemy locations and damages them if it hits
  • Feefslider: Floating shark that chases enemies and explodes ink all over them

Tenta Missiles, Inkjet, Ink Storm, Ultra Stamp and Booyah Bomb return from previous games.

Salmon Run can be played at any time

PVE mode is now available 24/7 and includes some new bosses called Slammin’ Lid and Big Shot. There’s also a new King Salmon, and if you fight him, players’ tanks will turn into giant egg cannons. Big Runs will rotate in the future.

There’s also Anarchy Battles, where players compete in objective-based ranked battles. The modes – Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker, Clam Blitz – change regularly.

The lobby shines in new splendor

The center of Splatoon 3 features shops and skyscrapers.

turn 3 will revolve around a hub of the city once again, this time around the Splatsville lobby. Friends appear as 3D holograms and you can easily visit them in battle. Once they’ve teamed up, they’ll be able to see each other depending on where else they go in the game. And with Memory Player, you can relive past victories or shake your head at your worst losses.

turn 3 truly embraces the metaverse

Nintendo spent most of the presentation digging deep into new shops and customization options. There’s a ton, including lockers that you can personalize and show off to recent opponents, customizable splashtags, and emotes. Most of these things can be bought in the Hotlantis shop, which is regularly updated. Of course, Sheldon will also be selling gear again at Ammo Knights, Gnarly Eddy has you covered at Headgear, Jel La Fleur measures you up for best fit at Man-o’-Wardrobe, and Mr. Coco is a burly lobster who loves CrossFit and loves shoes for sale at the Crush Station (get it?!).

Table Turf Battle is a complete card game turn 3

Characters play a card game on a board that looks like a Tetris level.

I love minigames, especially card based ones. triple triad (Final Fantasy VIII), Pazaak (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic), Gwent (The witcher 3), they are all crackers. Table Turf Battle looks like it could be another winner. You place cards to control the board in a 2D turn-based spin-off of Turf War. There are over 150 cards to collect, and you can battle other NPCs to collect packs. However, it is not yet known if you can play against other people.

There is three idols this time around

Where previous games had two, turn 3 will have an additional host for the fanart crowd to let off steam with. Alongside Frye and Shiver, Big Man is a manta ray who holds up the big screen during the Anarchy Splatcasts.

Splatfest returns with three options

Three hosts also means more voting opportunities for Splatfests. Along with confirming that the event would return for Splatoon 3, Nintendo also announced that the first-ever pre-release will take place on August 27th at 12:00pm ET via a free demo for the game. And the second half of the event will work a little differently, ending with a series of Tricolor Turf War battles where teams compete in a 4v2v2 triathlon. That competition is between Scissors stone paper. I’ll be the team paper because as Frye points out, and like everyone splatoon Fan knows: “You can write DEVASTATING things on paper.”

There are at least two years of post-launch updates

An Inkling prepares for an Anarchy Battle series on the menu screen.

turn 3The in-game catalog is updated every three months. New weapons are also introduced at this time. X Battle and League Battle will come in future updates. The game will also get major paid DLC expansions, but Nintendo isn’t giving more details on that just yet. It sounds similar to what we got Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Keeping the amiibo dream alive

A new yellow Inkling, blue Octoling, and Smallfry Amiibo are coming before the end of the year. turn 2 The characters Callie and Marie and Pearl and Marina are also re-released. They come with exclusive in-game gear and allow you to switch between loadouts more easily.

Nintendo still refuses to do proper in-game voice chat

You still need to use the Nintendo Switch app to talk to friends online. SplatNet 3 launches with the game and also lets you check game records and other stats. Because it’s 2022 and Xbox is getting Discord, but Nintendo still makes players pay for online multiplayer that lacks basic features.
