‘Thor: Love and Thunder’: Initial reactions call the film ‘alive and alive’

Taika Waititi’s highly anticipated film, Thor: Love and Thunder, which has its world premiere on June 23 in Hollywood, has received initial reactions. Expectations for the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are sky-high considering Waititi’s final comic book, Thor: Ragnarok, is widely considered one of the best Marvel films.

According to journalists and critics on social media, those expectations were met. Film critic Simon Thompson wrote: “#ThorLoveAndThunder is a vibrant and vibrant explosion that delivers. Hemsworth’s Thor remains a jewel in Marvel’s crown. Bales Gorr is a murderous boogeyman who mixes the campy and the spooky. Portman’s Foster and Thompson’s Valkyrie are a top notch pairing. Crowe’s Zeus is *the chef’s kiss*.”

Insider correspondent Kirsten Acuna agreed, specifically praising Christian Bale’s performance as Gorr, writing that he’s “phenomenal menace” and “one of the scariest Marvel villains we’ve seen on screen.”

Critic Courtney Howard praised Taika Waititi’s direction, saying it delivered “a subversive, irreverent spectacle” with “great story, engagement and character building”.

Some were more critical of the film, such as Bro Bible senior writer Eric Italiano, who liked “Love and Thunder” in general but said the plot “felt flat and stale”.

The latest Thor sequel, set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, sees Chris Hemsworth’s superhero teaming up with Korg (voiced by Waititi), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Stopping Gorr the God Butcher ( Bale) from eliminating all the gods. Portman’s return to the MCU caused the most excitement ahead of the release of Thor: Love and Thunder. Portman sat out “Ragnarok” and appears in the new film as Mighty Thor, in which she also wields the mystical hammer Mjolnir.

“On ‘Black Swan,’ I was asked to go as small as possible,” Portman said recently diversity for a cover story. “Here I was asked to grow as tall as possible. That is a great challenge – and also a great attitude as a woman.”

“I saw her play the scientist character in ‘Thor’ 1 and 2 and it just seemed pointless to do it again,” added Waititi of Portman’s return as a superhero. “This character feels like a love interest. It’s an earth woman walking around being mortal and not really consistent.”

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters nationwide on July 8th. See the posts below for more initial reactions.
