Taika Waititi’s highly anticipated film, Thor: Love and Thunder, which has its world premiere on June 23 in Hollywood, has received initial reactions. Expectations for the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are sky-high considering Waititi’s final comic book, Thor: Ragnarok, is widely considered one of the best Marvel films.
According to journalists and critics on social media, those expectations were met. Film critic Simon Thompson wrote: “#ThorLoveAndThunder is a vibrant and vibrant explosion that delivers. Hemsworth’s Thor remains a jewel in Marvel’s crown. Bales Gorr is a murderous boogeyman who mixes the campy and the spooky. Portman’s Foster and Thompson’s Valkyrie are a top notch pairing. Crowe’s Zeus is *the chef’s kiss*.”

Insider correspondent Kirsten Acuna agreed, specifically praising Christian Bale’s performance as Gorr, writing that he’s “phenomenal menace” and “one of the scariest Marvel villains we’ve seen on screen.”
Christian Bale is phenomenally menacing #ThorLoveandDonner‘s villain, Gorr the God Butcher. One of the scariest Marvel villains we’ve ever seen on screen. Gave me some Dark Knight Ledger Joker vibes at some point. pic.twitter.com/zsg9SNXfqY

Critic Courtney Howard praised Taika Waititi’s direction, saying it delivered “a subversive, irreverent spectacle” with “great story, engagement and character building”.
#ThorLoveAndDonner has an appetite for destruction & laughs. It’s totally awesome! Taika Waititi offers a subversive, irreverent spectacle. Great story, missions and character building. Chris Hemsworth & Natalie Portman, great. Russell Crowe & Christian Bale easily slip into the world pic.twitter.com/W7PUUXIfM5

Some were more critical of the film, such as Bro Bible senior writer Eric Italiano, who liked “Love and Thunder” in general but said the plot “felt flat and stale”.
#ThorLoveAndDonner is the funnest movie in the MCU. The jokes are excellent, as is the cast who perform them.
Of course, Christian Bale is also terrifying #gorr

The latest Thor sequel, set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, sees Chris Hemsworth’s superhero teaming up with Korg (voiced by Waititi), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Stopping Gorr the God Butcher ( Bale) from eliminating all the gods. Portman’s return to the MCU caused the most excitement ahead of the release of Thor: Love and Thunder. Portman sat out “Ragnarok” and appears in the new film as Mighty Thor, in which she also wields the mystical hammer Mjolnir.
“On ‘Black Swan,’ I was asked to go as small as possible,” Portman said recently diversity for a cover story. “Here I was asked to grow as tall as possible. That is a great challenge – and also a great attitude as a woman.”
“I saw her play the scientist character in ‘Thor’ 1 and 2 and it just seemed pointless to do it again,” added Waititi of Portman’s return as a superhero. “This character feels like a love interest. It’s an earth woman walking around being mortal and not really consistent.”
Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters nationwide on July 8th. See the posts below for more initial reactions.
Another classic Thor adventure! #ThorLoveAndDonner is all I wanted. Big, colorful, weird Guns N’ Roses-fueled battles with a hopelessly romantic tale of finding love in unexpected places. Christian Bale & Russell Crowe are particularly great. And Korg! pic.twitter.com/fu0gTUuMRj

I saw #ThorLoveAndDonner. It doesn’t quite measure up to the visual or comedic bombast of Ragnarok, but Taika Waititi makes up for it with an emotionally mature Marvel film. It’s also very funny (Natalie has jokes) and features one of the most stunning visual sequences in MCU history.

#ThorLoveAndDonner is much more episodic than I would have guessed. Makes for big laughs. Very normal cookie cutter villain starring Christian Bale. I want the buddy cop comedy starring Natalie Portman & Tessa Thompson. Matt Damon needs to go to Broadway. Post credits are EPIC! pure fun. pic.twitter.com/2J5UQuHHSA
