Belinda Bencic made a spirited comeback Ons Jabeur in the final of 2022 WTA Credit One Charleston Open to win her sixth career title and first on clay. Playing at tour level in her first clay-court final, Bencic overcame a stumble in the second set to emerge 6-1, 5-7, 4-6 victors in a grueling 2 hours and 35 minutes.

Benci stormed through the opening set as the Tunisian made a shaky start to the game. But Jabeur bounced back quickly, coming out of a collapse in set number two to force a decider. After trading early breaks, Bencic found his footing quickly, winning 3 of the last 4 games to win their first title of the year. It was also the first time since then that a Swiss player has won the title in Charleston Martina Hingis in 1999. Bencic will return to the top 15 in 13th place and Jabeur will climb to 9th in the world.

Bencic praised her opponent Jabeur, who burst into tears after losing the final. Playing in her fifth WTA Finals, Jabeur ended up on the losing side for the fourth time. Bencic gave the Tunisian high praise, saying she deserved to be a winner today.

“It was a great final Ons please don’t cry you are such a great player and even better person. Everyone in the stadium knows everyone in the world knows you’re incredible. I admire you a lot and you are a great fighter, you gave me everything I had today and this tournament really deserves both winners.” said Bencic during the award ceremony.

Benic was just two points away from being eliminated from the tournament in the first round against Wang Xiyu. It wasn’t an easy road from there either, as she then had to defeat the WTA’s new teenage sensation, Linda Fruhvirtova, and then knock out two of the top 10 seeds Madison key and Paula Badosa.

“Super proud to have won the first title on clay. I think it was a week that I struggled. I was two points away from elimination in the first round and I feel like that’s how you win the tournament. I’m just really relieved that I served it. I think Ons, she took everything from me today. And at some point I just didn’t know what to do anymore, and I think she played really well in the second set… I just tried to fight for every point.”
