This Is Us Finale: Mandy Moore talks about the ending, the scene with Jack and Rebecca

(SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read if you haven’t seen Us, the May 24 series finale of This Is Us.)

Understandably, saying goodbye to This Is Us wasn’t an easy task for Mandy Moore. So she leaned in, especially when it came to wrapping up the NBC series with the train scenes.

“I took a moment, I think probably the first take of the rehearsal or something, to really feel it, really listen to Gerald McRaney (Dr. K) and allow myself that emotional reaction,” she said recently diversity. “As time went by and we really got into the scene, it was like, ‘Oh, okay. I can attend.’”

However, when it came to the last scene of the penultimate episode, as well as the actual closing scenes with Milo Ventimiglia – the duo talking while lying in bed on the train in the afterlife – things got a lot more difficult. In fact, during this interview, Moore couldn’t help but cry while talking about it.

“This is my partner for six seasons and it’s like, ‘Wow, we really did this together. We were mom and dad.” It was so easy to be present and even just absorb something [Rebecca] said, ‘I’m scared of the unknown, I don’t know how to do this,'” she said through tears. “It very much reflects the way you feel about the end of a very pivotal part of your life. I take to heart what William’s character said in the previous episode – if something makes you sad, it’s because you really loved it as it unfolded, as it happened.”

During these scenes, Ventimiglia again showed his support for Moore.

“Cute Milo had a ball of fabric under the pillow for me,” she explained. “With each shot, Milo, very gently, helped me turn the pillow over so the tear stains wouldn’t show. We just tried to configure the pillow on every setting so you can’t see where Mandy was crying! He gave me my little bundle of tissues to wipe away the tears. It was so defining of our relationship and the way we were always supportive and had each other’s backs. It was effortless from the start and it was effortless to the end. I acknowledge that I will never have a film partner like Milo again. It’s so rare to connect with someone on this level. In every respect, this job was a unique experience.”

That the final episodes of This Is Us were filmed a bit out of order was a definite benefit for Moore, who stated, “It would have been impossible to do any train stuff with Milo at the very end. I would have been a crying mess.”

Luckily for Moore, all of her and Ventimiglia’s flashbacks to the versions of Jack and Rebecca as young parents used in the finale — with the exception of the toy store part — were shot three or four years ago to capture the kids of that age.

“I saw it for the first time yesterday and really had no memory. It was one of the most bizarre experiences… I remember thinking [while filming], those are really nice scenes, but they could also be part of every episode, so maybe that’s why they never crossed my mind,” she recalled. “It was a revelation for the audience that saw it the other day, like, ‘Oh, we did that.’ I really couldn’t remember, it’s been so long.”

Ultimately, Moore will remember the experience and knowledge that “none of us will ever find a group like this again” — and be okay with that. How can she follow that up with her next job? By steering in a completely different direction.

“I want to give myself a little time and distance to figure out what the next step is, and ultimately [try] something really different. I don’t know what that is now, I don’t know how to define it, but I think we’ve obviously all gotten rid of the ensemble’s family drama. It’s not going to get any better, so why not try something completely different,” Moore said. “I’m excited to take a moment and figure out what that is and hopefully something that’s just as challenging and just goes in a completely different direction.” This Is Us Finale: Mandy Moore talks about the ending, the scene with Jack and Rebecca
