7. seed Andrei Rublev survived an early scare in the first round of the French Open 2022 but saw it through as the game progressed. Against Soonwoo Kwon, Rublev won the match 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and advanced to the second round. This was Rublev’s second win in the first round of the Grand Slam in his fourth appearance in the peloton.
The French Open will be an important event for Rublev as they offer him the best chance of earning maximum points to add to his tally and needing a deep run. The Roland Garros become important for Rublev and his compatriots as they are banned from playing Wimbledon Championships 2022 and lose all their points from the 2021 edition.
However, the entire tour will lose points at this year’s Wimbledon after both ATP and WTA decided to strip Wimbledon of all ranking points as the Grand Slam made no change to its decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players. With no points offered, the big question is whether top-tier players will play at Wimbledon and Rublev took the lead Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer when presenting his thoughts.
“I don’t know (if top players will skip Wimbledon) because I haven’t spoken to any player about it. I think they will play for sure because the top players, especially Nadal and Djokovic, are not playing for points or for money now. They play to be the first in history to achieve that [the most number] of slams”, said Rublev.

“We have to defend each other”: Andrey Rublev
Rublev also stressed the point that decisions are made from Wimbledon and ATP are not good publicity for the sport and hurt players like Big-3 more than anyone else. He talked about how that Big 3 have helped make tennis more popular, and in addition to player protection, the tournament also needs protection.
“So tennis will grow, grow, grow a lot, because now all the success of tennis is only because of these three players, because of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer. They did all the promotion so tennis is now in its prime. Live streaming, prize money that people are following more and more in tennis, that’s just because of these three players. It should also be the other way around.
“Tennis should also encourage these players. Usually, I think it’s teamwork. Their stakes are different so it’s important that everyone works together to keep this incredible glory that we now have thanks to these three players. If we don’t work together, we’ll destroy it. Somewhere we have to defend each other, we have to defend the tournaments and the tournaments have to defend the players.” added Rublev in his press conference.
