Julianna Pena found out the hard way at UFC 277 that you can just step over the lioness and walk away unscarred. Pena became the first woman to defeat Amanda in years as she earned the submission victory over Nunes ay UFC 269. After winning the title, Pena seemed confident in her abilities to beat Amanda every time they competed.

While a few fans and Fighters suggested it was the greatest coincidence in the history of the sport, Nunes seemed keen to prove that it was just that, a stroke of luck. At UFC 277, the two met again after a heated week of trash talk that saw Pena fire entire divisions and claim 135 was the only legitimate one.

From the opening round, a calm and collected Nunes was able to grapple Pena, landing heavy punches and confusing them with well-placed trips. In fact, Nunes was able to secure the record for most knockdowns in a single round for a women’s fight. Although Pena managed to throw in a few attempts at submission, she was no match for the ruthless hunger in Nunes to prove she was the better fighter.

Dana White reveals Julianna Pena was taken backstage for medical treatment

In the third round, Nunes hit the ground with a heavy elbow, causing a significant cut in Pena’s hairline. While the cutman did a commendable job between rounds, there were more heavy punches from Nunes as the fourth progressed, opening up the cut further, causing Pena to resemble some of them Tony Ferguson opponent back when he was on his 12-fight winning streak

At the end of the fight, a beaten and bloodied Pena had to finish, but was still easily countered by Pena, who at one point spurted blood from her forehead while trapped in a guillotine. After the fifth, Pena was immediately taken backstage and required medical attention. To the press after the fight, Dana White would reveal why that was.

Dana revealed that Pena actually sustained more gruesome injuries than meets the eye.“You’re missing a big piece of your head” said White as he revealed Pena had been taken immediately for plastic surgery.
