The Witcher 3 Next-Gen has been postponed indefinitely

CD Projekt RED initially announced The witcher 3 Next-gen port in September 2020. While the team didn’t reveal much, they did indicate that the new version will include support for ray tracing and other enhanced visual technologies. This announcement caused fans to get very excited at the prospect of bringing Geralt’s adventures to the PS5 and XSX.

The port has passed two full years without major updates as the previously responsible team has been working on the project. Saber Interactive was originally set to develop the port and had been working on it for some time. But with today’s change, that’s no longer the case. CD Projekt RED just announced that this next-gen version has been postponed indefinitely.

“We have decided to let our in-house development team handle the remaining work on the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. We are currently evaluating the scope of work to be carried out and therefore have to postpone the release of Q2 until further notice.

The reason for the change was not given, with the company saying it has no further plans to announce at this time. The company also declined to comment on the exact reasons for the move, fueling speculation. The current working theories behind the sting are numerous and remain unfounded. The reasons mentioned could have something to do with the current war in Ukraine. It was reported that Saber Russia, a Saint Petersburg-based studio, would handle development.

CDPR confirmed at the time that Saber Interactive, which ported the game to the Nintendo Switch in 2019, would also oversee development of the next-gen versions. “They already know our technology very well,” then-studio president Adam Kiciński told investors. It is quite possible that the ongoing sanctions against Russia played a role here.
