The Watcher is the most streamed as Netflix debuts in UK TV ratings

UK viewership figures for global streamer Netflix are finally available and ‘The Watcher’ was the most-streamed show on November 1, with more than half a million views, according to

The traditional measurement markers of audience share and peak audience are not relevant because on-demand services do not have a schedule and the only relevant metric is average viewership. On that front, Netflix’s half million, while not directly comparable, is respectable, even if it ranks among the top 20 shows watched on November 1st by 4.3 million viewers for Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off’ at the top, handing Spot an average of 1.3 million for another Channel 4 show ‘Nnamdi’s Story: Stand Up to Cancer’ in the 20th century.

In October, Netflix joined the UK ratings body BARB – an acronym for the Broadcasters Audience Research Board – in a massive coup for measuring TV audiences in the UK. While BARB has technically reported streaming numbers in the UK – numbers only available to its broadcaster customers and banned from publication – for a year, it did so without the involvement of Netflix and Amazon as customers. Disney+ is already signed up.

BARB plans to deliver a definitive Most Watched Shows report each week, expanding its weekly coverage of the top 50 shows on its website to include shows across all broadcast channels and SVOD services, including Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Netflix , to include them in the top 50 of the week. The first report will be available on November 15th and can be viewed during the week ending November 6th.

The second report will be available on November 22nd for viewing in the week ending November 13th. This will potentially include viewing of The Crown season 5 on Netflix after its November 9 launch.

Additionally, starting the second week of November 2022, BARB will publicly report monthly reach and viewership for broadcaster groups and SVOD/AVOD services that account for more than 0.5% of total identified viewership.

BARB Chief Executive Justin Sampson said: “As our viewership figures for Netflix become more public, it’s clear that the leading SVOD service is an integral part of the television ecosystem. And our independent data will clarify how Netflix and other SVOD services compete with broadcasters, which continue to make up the lion’s share of viewers.”

“For many programs, our overnight stay rates are a snapshot of their popularity. Viewers are increasingly watching shows at times that suit them, so consolidated ratings over seven or even 28 days are widely considered a better measure of a show’s success. Our final weekly report of the most watched shows across all linear and on-demand services focuses on viewing over the first seven days,” Sampson added.
