“The View” under fire for the Halloween segment with a costume mocking Will Smith’s slap in the face by Chris Rock

The latest The View Halloween episode featured a segment titled “BOO Are You Wearing in 2022?” where Wardrobe Manager Ashley Alderfer-Kaufman created costumes that depicted hot news topics.

One theme designed in costume was the 94th Academy Awards, where actor Will Smith took the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

A child wearing a gold bodysuit designed as an Oscar character made his way into the crowd with a red handprint on one cheek.

Alderfer-Kaufman explained, “It wasn’t about who, it was about what happened to best actor Will Smith when he went up and slapped Chris Rock.”

Alderfer-Kaufman reminded viewers that while they were “not in favor of any kind of violence,” Alderfer-Kaufman explained, “couldn’t help but talk about one of this year’s hottest topics.”

The hot topic called “The Oscar Slap” received a lot of negative feedback from disaffected fans who felt it was inappropriate for a serious topic like this to be revived into a joke.

“The kid in the ‘Oscar Slap costume’ looked like he was about to cry, they hated him and the idea obviously.”

“The Oscar slap costume felt a little sickly. It was tasteless and the boy looked like he was in literal pain.”

“Absolutely disgusting to talk about using children as political pawns, that’s pathologically ill!”

Smith received backlash after over 15 million Americans watched him see Rock for comparing Pinkett Smith to the movie character GI Jane.

Since his problematic slap, Smith has apologized to Rock and also soon resigned from future Academy events before finally being banned from attending Oscars affairs for the next 10 years.

Although Smith’s ban has been questioned since the release of his latest film, Emancipation, many still found the section in The View highlighting this situation to be inappropriate and insensitive.
