The latest trailers for the Super Mario Bros. Movie shocked fans by actually making the video game adaptation look good. As the film ramps up publicity and marketing for its upcoming April 2023 release date, more details about the film have leaked out, including a flyer featuring McDonald’s Happy Meal toys. The upcoming Happy Meal toys will be based on the Super Mario Bros. movie and will feature figures of the main characters such as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Bowser.
However, one toy stands out from the Happy Meal range. Based on the flyer, the final toy is that of a chubby little star that looks a lot like a luma. Lumas are stars that help create new galaxies and were first introduced in Super Mario Galaxy. Lumas are mentored by fan-favorite character Princess Rosalina, and wherever there’s a Luma, that generally means Rosalina isn’t too far behind.

Based on what was shown the Super Mario Bros. Movie appears to be based more on the classic Mario games on the NES and SNES, with some influences from Mario Kart and Super Mario 64. There doesn’t seem to be any indication that Super Mario Galaxy will have a role in the film, but Luma can for a future entry in the Mario film series, possibly a post-credits scene.
Misunderstandings with toy manufacturers often result in toys being released or revealed earlier than expected, spoiling storylines about the product before it is officially released. Because of this, toys and other merchandise will often leak into major motion blockbusters. That may be the case for the Luma toy revealed on the Happy Meals flyer. However, toy manufacturers would also often create numbers that were not based on the final product. Occasionally manufacturers need to fill a quota for the number of toys they need to make and would fill the quota with generic toys from the same franchise. So maybe McDonald’s will release a Luma toy, not because the character will appear in the movie, but because they had an extra slot it needed to fill for its Happy Meals.
