‘The Super Bowl shouldn’t feel bigger than the Champions League’ – PSG’s Nasser Al-Khelaifi on how he wants to change the game – The Athletic

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, President of Paris Saint-Germain, conducts idea workshops in a conference suite at the Hilton Hotel in Vienna. He talks about the future of the UEFA Champions League and the kind of ideas that could enable clubs to discover new commercial opportunities and, he says, reach a wider audience.

“The final should be bigger,” he says. “I can’t understand how the Super Bowl can feel bigger than the Champions League Finals. The Super Bowl, and the US in general, has that mindset, creativity, and entertainment. That’s what I suggested, having a Champions League opening ceremony, having a game on opening night where the winners play against a big team – maybe it’s not a good idea, but let’s at least challenge the status quo. Every game has to be an event and entertainment.”

After a press conference in the Austrian capital, Al-Khelaifi takes a brief break from an increasingly relentless diary. His thoughts wander further, outlining how he believes the UEFA Super Cup should be re-imagined while emphasizing the need to consider “new venues, new markets, new formats”. Inspired by a presentation in Vienna, he says he invited Harvard Business School to PSG to refine the way his club works. There is more to it than that.

Al-Khelaifi, 48, is president of Paris Saint-Germain, but that’s just part of an ever-expanding repertoire. The Qatari businessman is also chairman of the global television network BeIn Sport, owned by Qatar, one of the largest acquirers of live media rights in the world, as well as chairman of the Qatar Tennis Federation and vice chairman of the Asian Tennis Federation. He’s traveling direct from Vienna to Doha to both be in town for the World Cup draw and to promote a new Qatar-sponsored global padel tournament.
