The streets of Melbourne are closed when a gunshot sparks a massive police manhunt

Roads have been closed for hours as a massive police manhunt is underway in central Melbourne.

7NEWS can reveal that it began with a dramatic confrontation when police were called to an address in Collingwood on Friday morning.

When officers arrived, the incident quickly turned violent.

Police confronted a man in Collingwood when he grabbed an officer’s gun and pulled the trigger.

He dropped the gun and ran, sparking a manhunt that blocked Dight Street and neighboring areas.

Critical Incident Response Team, Public Order Response, the K9 unit and the Air Wing have been called to search for the man but he remains at large as of Friday night.

Although nearly 12 hours have passed since the shooting, police told 7NEWS they are closing in on the suspect.
