Ukraine’s Special Operations Command has just posted a threat to Russian artillerymen on social media, a threat that amounts to a war crime. This command, in a public Post on Facebookcalled:
The SSO Brotherhood of Ukraine sends their greetings to the Russian Artillery!
Congratulations to you: After you bombed our peaceful cities, our relatives, children, loved ones – you, worms, became our number one target.
We’ll explain it to you, Vanki: you appear to be far away, shooting at targets you can’t see. You don’t see small children, old people, homes, kindergartens, schools and hospitals – all these are only goals for you. Pushed, flown, hit – fucked up, right?
Now look, worms: you don’t see your goals and seem relieved. But believe me, it never gets easier for you scum. We already have the information about you. And if it’s not for someone else, it’s a matter of minutes.
From now on there will be no more captured Russian artillery. No mercy, no “please don’t kill, I surrender” will escape. Every calculation, whether commander, driver, guide, loader – is slaughtered like pigs.
Tie your pants, we’ve already come for you. Call your mother one last time. Say you’ll die soon, Jackal. We are not death, we are worse!
They’ve since edited the post and changed the part that ends after the sentence that ends with “Minutensache” to read:
Every bill, no matter: commander, driver, guide, loader – piss your pants, we’ll be there for you.
Call your mother one last time. Say you’ll die soon, Jackal.
We are not death, we are worse!
However, the original version can be viewed here:
Ukraine’s Special Operations Command has just warned Russian soldiers that they will not be captured and “slaughtered like pigs” without an opportunity to surrender.

This edit is significantly tamer and no longer a war crime. The original version, the part that contains the line “From now on there will be no more captured Russian artillery. No mercy, no “please don’t kill, I surrender” will escape. Every calculation, whether commander, driver, guide, loader – is slaughtered like pigs.” this is a call for a war crime.
As reported here“Belligerent powers that take prisoners of war are expected to treat those prisoners in accordance with international law. Reprisals against prisoners of war are prohibited and they must be released and returned to their homeland as soon as active hostilities cease. Prisoners of war must be treated humanely and cannot be prosecuted simply for taking part in an armed conflict.”
What does that mean? That killing POWs is a BIG mistake for Ukraine; Much of the goodwill shown to him comes from the West, who see him as a good guy. If it starts executing prisoners, it won’t last long.
It is understandable that the Ukrainians are angry with the Russians and want to kill them all. But killing prisoners would be a mistake, and not just because it would undermine Western goodwill.
Perhaps more importantly, doing so could persuade the Russians to use a little more brutality. So far, they have largely avoided destroying Ukraine’s cities with heavy weapons. If prisoners of war are murdered in cold blood… well, that reluctance is unlikely to last.
