The Royals’ losing streak is reminiscent of stretches from last season – The Athletic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It was hard not to think back to a conversation on the first day of spring training on Friday night. Two-time Royals All-Star Whit Merrifield sat outside in a chair at the end of a table under a white tent.

Reporters sat around the table. For almost eight minutes, a conversation revolved around the coming season. A reporter asked about something Merrifield had said days earlier: that he was tired of talking about the club’s potential.

“We have a lot of players who, if they fulfill their potential, can do a lot of good things,” Merrifield said. “We’ve had injuries and lost years that’s going to happen. But we just have to do it. We just have to go out and win. And we can. We just haven’t done it yet. I’m just tired of talking about our potential and I’m ready to win a few games.”

Later in the conversation, another reporter asked about the different dynamics between this group and last year’s team, which included many new faces.

“There’s a familiarity,” Merrifield said, “but if you want to look at the same group of guys, we won… 74 games? So we have the same group of guys plus a few additions. But we all have to take our game to the next level together, learn from our mistakes, play better and win games.”

The royals have played seven games this season – that’s 4.3 percent – but they haven’t taken their game to the next level overall. You didn’t play any better. And they didn’t win. Their 2-1 loss to Detroit on Friday extended the Royals’ losing streak to five games, the longest since nine games from June 23 to July 1 last year. Additionally, the Royals are ranked 29th in OPS (.
