The Red Sox bet on the controversial former Mets, Phillies reliever

The Boston Red Sox have had bullpen issues all season, and they’re apparently trying to fix that by signing a controversial reliever.
That Boston Red Sox have had ongoing issues with their bullpen all season, and they appear to be addressing that by signing former New York Mets relive Jeurys Familia.
Familia will begin his journey with the Red Sox in their farm system at Triple-A.
Familia has played almost all of his career seasons with the Mets, but played briefly with the Oakland Athletics in 2018 and played with the Philadelphia Phillies this season.
The 32-year-old helper has been inconsistent throughout his career and is currently having a poor season.
However, the bullpen needs all the help he can get.
Red Sox: Jeurys Familia’s struggles and off-field behavior make for a questionable deal
Familia is unlikely to help the bullpen this season. He is having his worst season yet, averaging a 6.09 ERA, a .338 batting average and a 1.85 WHIP. He has never been consistently good and is unpredictable every season. However, he has had some really good seasons.
His best seasons were in 2015 and 2016 when he had 94 saves together. In 2015 he had an extremely good season with an ERA of 1.85, a BAA of 0.207 and a WHIP of 1.00. Unfortunately, he could not repeat this success.
What makes the signing look worse given his struggles on the mound is Familia’s behavior off the field. In 2016, he was arrested in New Jersey for domestic violence. The charges were dismissed, but he was still serving a 15-game suspension after MLB investigated the incident.
For a Boston season that’s been filled with bad moves, adding a helper with a history related to domestic violence and who hasn’t been good on the field lately won’t make being a Red Sox fan any easier.
